MSc Physics: Two-day Workshop on Mathematical Physics

Date : 27-Oct-2017

The P.G. Department of Physics, St Philomena College, Puttur had organised Two-day National Workshop sponsored by National Board for Higher mathematics (NBHM) on “Mathematical physics”, on 23rd and 24th October 2017.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Vishnu Mayya Bannur, Rtd. Professor, Calicut University, Kerala by lighting the lamp. Prof. K.B. Vijayakumar, Department of Studies in Physics, Mangalore University was the Chief Guest. Prof. Leo Noronha, Principal, St Philomena College was the president of the inaugural function, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairman of P.G. Studies was the guest of honour, Dr E. Deepak D’Silva, convener of the workshop and Coordinator of P.G. Physics was also present on this occasion.

The inaugurator of the function Dr Vishnu Mayya Bannur delivered keynote address and said, “Post graduate Students must do in-depth study of Physics concepts and also develop problem solving skills rather simply concentrating on examination grades”.

Chief Guest of the function K.B. Vijayakumar said in his address that workshops usually topics of this kind are rarely taken up by the institutions for deliberations; so he congratulated the department for organizing this workshop. He told, study of Physics is impracticable without Mathematics.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro said that to do higher studies and to master over the Physics subject one should also possess mastery over Mathematics; both go hand-in-hand.

Principal of the college Prof. Leo Norohna in his presidential remarks said that “As technology is essential component to envisage digital India; advance and clear knowledge of Science is required to make developed India”.

Dr E Deepak D’Silva, Convener of the workshop welcomed the gathering and Ms. Shwetha Rai K, Assistant Professor proposed vote of thanks.

On the first day in the first session Dr Vishnu mayya Bannur, delivered a talk on ‘Green’s function. Dr Ajith K M (Professor of Physics NITK, Surathkal) gave a lecture on ‘Essence of linear vector space, Dirac delta function and Fourier transform in physics’. During the session in the afternoon, Dr Udayanandan (Professor of Physics, Nehru Arts and Science College, Kanhangad) delivered resource talk on the topic ‘Introduction to Tensors’.

On the second day during the first session Dr K B Vijaya Kumar addressed on ‘Group Theory’. Dr Shiju Grorge (Professor of Mathematics, Government College, Kasaragod), spoke on ‘Calculus of variation’.

Dr E Deepak D’Silva, Convener of the workshop; expressed deep gratitude to the resource persons, sponsors, funding agencies, participants and all who had involved directly and indirectly in materializing the workshop.
