The Research Expert Committee in association with M.S.W. Department, and M.A. Economics Department, St Philomena College, Puttur had organized a one-day National Workshop on “Basic Statistical Methods Using EZR (Easy R)” on 1st September, 2018. EZR is vital for all researchers before they proceed to surveys and data analyses. This one-day workshop was focused for the beginners with little or no experience in EZR who want to acquire the skills and knowledge on getting started with EZR.
The Programme was inaugurated by Dr Vasudeva Guddattu , Associate professor of, Statistical Department, Manipal University. Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairman of the college was the president of the programme. Dr Deepak Dsilva, Convener of the Research Expert Committee was present during the occasion.
The president in his address mentioned the five important qualities of a good researcher. He said in-order to achieve proper results and success in the research area the researcher should possess qualities like keen Interest, writing skill, reading skill, communication skill, and reasoning capacity.
The resource person said that, research is an integral part of academic life and the use of modern technologies helps to maintain the quality and consistency of it. In order to facilitate research work in economics, social work and commerce some of the software’s are necessary to master. In this regard he explained the importance of EZR (Easy R) software in research. He also said major research fraternity around the globe now are using this open access software to analyze and interpret the data and thereby publishing their quality research. He conducted practical sessions to have hands on experience of this software.
The topics which were covered are following: Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and dispersion. Inferential Analyses: measures of association, tests of significance (chi square, t-test) analysis of variance (ANOVA). Introduction to EZR (Easy R). Basic steps, defining data, data entry, data transformation, data analysis, graphical (diagrammatic) presentation, statistical application using EZR. Simple correlation, elements of probability theory, concepts and methods of estimation.
The sixty participants including faculty members and research scholars from various colleges were present for the workshop. The programme began with the prayer by Mr Adarsha of M.S.W. Department. Dr Deepak D’Silva welcomed the guests and participants. Mrs Pratibha, Assistant Professor, M.S.W. Department performed vote of thanks and Ms Shabana of M.A. Economics was the master of ceremony.
