Folk Games Festival Held at SPC

DSC_8454_wmThe Humanities Association of St Philomena College Puttur organized an intercollegiate Folk Games Festival on March 15, 2016 on the college play ground. The Registrar of Karnataka Tulu Sahithya Academy Mr. Chandrahasa Rai inauguarated the festival and said ‘There are a number of traditional folk games played by the rural children of Tulu Nadu. A complete documentation and descriptive study of these folk games would help in the process of preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge.’

The Campus Director Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro participated as the chief guest. The Principal of St Philomena PU College Rev. Fr Vijay Lobo participated as the guest of honour. The Principal Prof. Leo Noronha presided over the function. The Convenor of Humanities Association Prof. Subair welcomed the gathering. Mr. Rakesh Rao propsed the vote of thanks. Ms. Akshatha Sharma compered the programme.

In the valedictory programme, Correspondent Very Rev. Fr Alfred J Pinto presided over the function. The principal Prof. Leo Noronha was the chief guest. The Vice Principal Prof. Vishnu bhat was the guest of honour. The Convenor of Humanities Association Prof. Subair welcomed the gathering. Prof. Norbert Mascarenhas, Department of History propsed the vote of thanks. Ms. Akshatha Sharma and Ms. Deepika compered the programme.

Traditional and folk games of Tulu Nadu such as ‘chenne Mane’, ‘goni cheela ota’, ‘lagori’, ‘madake odeyuvudu’, ‘suji dara ota’ ‘kaayi kuttuvudu’ and ‘pencil art’ were played by the participants.

Another highlight of the programme was the variety of dishes of Tulu Nadu which were served as breakfast and lunch to the participants. They included ‘padenji upkari’, ‘ bajil’, ‘ganji’ , ‘chatni ‘, ‘uppad’, ‘mundi palya’, ‘ale’ and ‘payasa’.

Among ten teams participated in this intercollegiate competition, Government First Grade College Vamadapadavu bagged the overall championship. Sri Ramakunjeshwara College Ramakunja secured the Runners up trophy.
