“Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)”-Two Days Workshop

“Free-and-Open-Source-Software-(FOSS)”-Two-Days-WorkshopThe Post Graduate Department of Physics, St Philomena College, Puttur, had organized a workshop on Free and Open source Software (FOSS), on 21st and 22ndAugust 2015.

The main focus of this workshop was to learn how to use latex software and operate ubantu software. This workshop was also intended to impart some basic skills in computer and internet usage in line with the curriculum and academic activities.

The Workshop was started with the prayer, followed by the keynote address by Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairperson, Centre for PG Studies, St Philomena College, Puttur. Dr E.Deepak D’Silva, Coordinator of MSc Physics; the resource persons Mr Praveen N, MrSooryanarayana Bhat B. of PG Computer Science Department;faculty members of PG Physics and students were present on the occasion.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro in his address desired that the gathering should get maximum benefit and should implement the skills inculcated through the workshopin the academic studies and thereby enhance the process of learning. Hewished all the students to take active part in the same.

During First session of the workshop, Mr Sooryanarayana Bhat B.addressed the participants on the topic “Basics of Ubuntu Operating System” and gave the information regarding its usage.

Mr Praveen N. spoke on the topic, “Introduction to LaTeX” during the second session and gave a presentation on the usage of LaTeX software and its various packages.

During the third session students got the opportunity to have hands on experience to install and practice the LaTeX software.And they were also provided with the knowledge of effective internet usage.

On the second day of the workshop in first session Mr Praveen N, gave introduction to the participants on the topic “Libre Office: Libre Writer and Libre Calc”. During Second session of the workshop, Mr Sooryanarayana Bhat spoke on the topic “Libre Impress and Libre Draw”.

At the end of the third session students expressed their opinion about the workshop positively. Ms. Meghashree was the master of ceremony and Ms Supreetha did vote of thanks.
